Did you fix the battery drain issues of this?
Skype has a problem of repeatedly connecting to its server which is the main reason for drainage.

Worked for me on my #EVO3D

if you log out, it won't try to reconnect AFAIK.

    Or am I missing something?

    hehe, this rocks!

    thanks for this!! B-)

    wondering about one thing:

Someone on XDA complained that this new version of Skype has a background service that prevents him from closing skype.

I'm not sure if his wording was accurate, and if he really meant that he was prevented from closing skype or if he just meant there's a skype service always running in the background that can't be closed down...

I guess this relates to potential battery drain, but of course if skype isn't running to save battery, then you also can't be called by any of your skype contacts, and calls to your skype-in phone number wouldn't go through either, I would assume.

Truth is, not everybody needs to always be callable through skype, so I'm wondering if Skype really only left us with the option of logging out and then the still running service just being passive, or if logging out would actually close the service too...?

Since you had to be pretty familiar with it to patch it, I was hoping you might know if the background service closes when you log out or if its still running, just in a passive state?

I'm just somewhat careful before overwriting my old version, cause I'm already thrilled that the SGS2 is my first phone ever to integrate skype into the regular phone dialer...

Can't you just log out of skype to do this?

    thanks for your answer Pulser,
the problem consists in when you log out, you need to reenter your password when you want to log back in and you won't be able to receive skype calls meanwhile which is PITA. Killing the task won't help either since it simply relaunches.
There was a useful tool Stop Skype which kills it but it doesn't work anymore for the new version.

But at the end of the day it isn't a problem of killing skype or logging out, skype should optimize their refresh intervals and their processing load.
Check you battery impact when you got skype running its devastating.

I think there's another issue here though... If skype is logged in and receiving calls, then it NEEDS to run in my view.

Hence if you kill it, it SHOULD restart...

But if you don't want to receive calls, you can log out, and thus skype won't run...

I don't really know of any messaging/comms app that isn't running in the background tbh.

exactly that is my point it needs to run. But when you look at e.g. a VOIP client like CSIPSIMPLE which also runs but hasn't got any significant battery impact you can see that it is possible to maintain a connection to the server while not draining the battery.
It all depends on the refresh intervals needed to reconnect to the server and let him know that the client is online. Again in CSIPSIMPLE you can control these intervals. If you take a look at your packet data indicator in the notification bar it usually drops from H to 3G when traffic ideals. Usually it maintains ideal until the next program needs to send a packet. Now if you got Skype running you can see that every 10 seconds or so Skype sends a packet and changes the connection to H. This is the main reason for the battery impact when running skype as far as I could figure.

It works great on my Evo 4g with gingerbread. It doesn't sadly work on my Asus Transformer with honeycomb 3.1. It launches but exits when I try to log in. Hopefully Skype will fix this in the future. Anyone else get it to work on honeycomb?

Did it work on your SG2? on mine the video call lasts a couple of seconds and that restarts the program.
Did you change anything during the installation process?

    Thank you very much!!! :)

Anyone tried it with the samsung infuse?
  18. pulser Administrator

    I made a 5 min video call :)

Didn't do anything other than remove existing skype stuff first...

    hello Pulser,
My phone is LG optimus 2X, i just upgrade skype to 2.0.0.47 from Android market, the video call still doesn't work on my device.
I want to try your apk but it looks base on 2.0.0.45, should i need to remove 0.47 to install yours?

    thanks
